Parker Probe

Parker Probe, also known as Parker Solar Probe, is a NASA space mission that was launched on 12 August 2018.
Its goal is to study the solar corona, the outer layer of the Sun, and to better understand the physics of the Sun and its influence on space weather.
The probe is named after US astrophysicist Eugene Parker, who made important contributions to the understanding of the solar wind and the Sun's dynamics.
It is the first time in history that a space mission has been named after a living person.

The Parker Probe has been designed to withstand high temperatures and extreme conditions. It comes closer to the Sun than any other spacecraft, reaching a minimum distance of approximately 6 million kilometres from the Sun's surface.
This is significantly closer than the orbit of Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun.
To protect itself from the intense heat and radiation, the probe has a carbon heat shield made up of several layers that keep it at a tolerable temperature. This shield can withstand temperatures of up to 1,370 degrees Celsius.
Parker Probe carries with it a suite of scientific instruments that collect fundamental data about the Sun.

These instruments measure the solar wind, temperature, density and magnetic fields in the solar corona. They also study energetic particles and coronal mass ejections, which are explosive eruptions in the solar corona.
The data collected by Parker Probe are vital for understanding how solar flares are generated and propagate, what causes the solar wind and how it affects the Earth and other parts of the solar system.
This helps us to predict and mitigate the detrimental effects of space weather on communications, satellites and technology in general.
The Parker Probe mission is scheduled to last seven years, during which it will make multiple close flybys of the Sun. Each time it approaches, the probe collects valuable information and sends the data back to Earth for analysis.
