Halley's Comet

Halley's Comet is often considered the most famous comet because it marked the first time astronomers discovered that comets could revisit our night skies.

Astronomers have linked the comet's appearance to observations made more than 2,000 years ago.

Halley was last seen over Earth in 1986, when it was discovered in space by an international fleet of spacecraft.

It will return in 2061 to begin its regular 76-year journey around the sun.

Until the time of English astronomer Edmond Halley (1656-1742), comets were thought to pass only through the solar system.

But in 1705, Halley used Isaac Newton's theories of gravity and planetary motion to calculate the orbits of several comets.

Halley discovered similarities in the orbits of bright comets reported in 1531, 1607 and 1682, and concluded that all three were actually a single travelling comet.

Halley correctly predicted the comet's return in 1758. It was the first known "periodic" comet in history and was later named in his honour.

Since then, the comet has been linked to ancient observations from over 2,000 years ago.

It appears in the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which records the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
