Aplicación del criterio de la primera derivada/ Crecimiento y decrecimiento de una función//Application of the criterion of the first derivative/ Growth and decay of a function.
// Find the intervals of increase and decrease of the following function in the interval [1,9], make a sketch of it.
Solución// Solution
Para resolver este problema, vamos a desarrollar la derivada de F: // To solve this problem, we are going to develop the derivative of F:
Esto es: // This is:
// And then, get the values of x where the derivative becomes 0, that is, where the tangent line to the graph of F is horizontal.
Esto se hace igualando la derivada a 0, es decir: F´(x)=0 // This is done by equating the derivative to 0, that is: F´(x)=0
Es decir: // That is to say:
Factorizando nos queda: (x-2)(x-6)=0 // Factoring we get: (x-2)(x-6)=0
Since we are asked to determine the intervals of increase and decrease in the interval [1,9], and the obtained numbers x=2 and x=6 are inside that interval, then we can make the following identification of possible intervals of increase and decrease for the function F.
We are going to elaborate a table where we will take a value for x within each interval identified in the previous part, we will evaluate the sign of the first derivative of F for each one of these values, and these results will indicate us in which of them, the function F is increasing or decreasing.
Comencemos // let's start
Entonces: // So:
La función F es: // The function F is:
Creciente en los intervalos [1,2] y [6,9] // Increasing in the intervals [1,2] and [6,9]
Decreciente en el intervalo [2,6] // Decreasing in the interval [2,6]
Bosquejemos el gráfico de F // Let's sketch the graph of F
Busquemos los puntos donde la tangente es horizontal al gráfico de F, esto es: // Let's look for the points where the tangent is horizontal to the graph of F, that is:
(2, F(2)) y (6, F(6))
Veamos // Let's see
Los puntos donde la tangente es horizontal al gráfico de F, son: // The points where the tangent is horizontal to the graph of F are:
Busquemos los valores de F en los que x=1 y x=9 // Let's find the values of F where x=1 and x=9
Esto es: // This is:
Estos son los puntos // These are the points
He aquí el bosquejo de F // Here is the sketch of F
// In the development of the exercise we use a procedure in which we equal the first derivative to 0, this motivates the following definition.
// The critical numbers of a function F are those numbers in the domain of F such that F´(x)=0 or F´(x) does not exist.
Ejemplos: // Examples:
// In the example we have been developing, the critical numbers of F are: 2 and 6.
2.-Si tenemos por ejemplo a: // If we have for example
Entonces su derivada es: // So its derivative is:
// Which does not exist for x=0, therefore 0 is a critical number for this function. Why doesn't the derivative of this function exist at x=0?
Ejercicio para el lector // Exercise for the reader
Hallar los números críticos para la siguiente función: // Find the critical numbers for the following function:
