Istanbul in Living Colour

Exploring the colours, patterns and everyday moments that give the city its unmistakable character.

Amid the tangled maze of Istanbul's streets, moments of striking symmetry appear where you least expect them. Your eye begins to pick out repeating window lines, the rhythm of balconies, rows of shutters, intricate wrought-iron railings and the clean geometry of old façades. Somehow, these patterns bring a sense of order to the city's beautiful chaos.

Then your attention shifts to colour. Suddenly, you find yourself in a neighbourhood where entire rows of houses are painted in bold shades of blue, yellow, pink, green and orange, each façade with a personality of its own.

Many of these historic buildings have been carefully restored in recent years, yet they have lost none of their lived-in charm. Bright walls sit alongside flower-filled windows, climbing vines and the quiet rhythm of everyday life.

It's this blend of colour and authenticity that makes these streets so memorable.

Equally eye-catching are Istanbul's famous rainbow staircases. Painted to brighten up the neighbourhood, they gradually became one of the city's most recognisable features.

As you make your way up the steps, it's hard not to notice how those vivid stripes transform the atmosphere around them. Even an ordinary walk home somehow feels a little brighter.

And then there are the streets shaded by dozens of colourful umbrellas. What began as a decorative touch above small cafés quickly became part of Istanbul's visual identity. By day, the umbrellas cast welcome shade; by night, they lend the streets a warm, inviting glow.

Today, it's hard to imagine Istanbul without its colourful façades, painted staircases and umbrellas floating overhead. Together, they create the Istanbul that stays with you — not because of its famous landmarks, but because of the countless small details woven into everyday life.

The colours and narrow streets of Istanbul really do make it great fun to shoot, especially when you get just away from the more crowded areas

I couldn't agree more — the quieter streets are where the real magic is. Thank you! 😌
