RE: Secrets of the Earth: Geological Wealth

I remember being surprised when I found out that, according to economists, Russia is the richest country when it comes to natural resources (perhaps, partly, cos it's the world's largest country). And yet it only makes something like 1.6% of the world's wealth and relies mostly (almost 50%) on its oil and gas resources for its wealth. If Russia adopted Western democracy and capitalism, there's a good chance it could be the world's richest country.

It is true that Russia has large amounts of natural resources, to mention, oil, gas, metals and wood, etc. It is also true that they are dependent on the Energy industry, with significant changes in terms of a more efficient economic model supported by these natural resources, it would be one of the most prosperous countries.
