Mi setup de trabajo, Linux y algo más

He estado montando mi estación de trabajo para estar más cómodo y productivo cuando estoy en casa, el espacio lo tengo, aunque limitado pero es mio y eso tiene mucho valor. La idea básicamente es tener mi laptop para trabajar y un servidor sobre el que programar sobre él de manera remota y realizar pruebas. ¡Lo he logrado!

Lo primero era darle orden al escritorio, recoger cables, organizar los tomas de energía y que todo quedara limpio y cómodo. Pocas horas le invertí, aún pueden mejorar cosas a futuro pero ya lo tengo.

Arriba del monitor instalé una repisa de madera, que por ahora no mostraré, donde está el router y el servidor. Espacio mejor aprovechado y más orden.

Lo siguiente era instalar el servidor: el equipo es una laptop Acer con algunos años que no cuenta con la pantalla, a pesar de ello está en muy buenas condiciones, le instalé un disco de 512 Gb para tener suficiente capacidad para lo que tengo pensado hacer con él. El sistema operativo lo tenía muy claro, he trabajado con Ubuntu server y me parece que es lo mejor, fácil de usar y estable. Les comparto una captura de la conexión remota.

Lo bueno de usar una laptop y este tipo de procesadores es el bajo consumo. Este equipo puede ser provisional si consigo una buena oferta de otro con mejor procesador, lo estaré buscando y pensando para decidirme a hacer la inversión.

En mi laptop Lenovo la situación era más complicada 😂, ¿que distribución instalar?. Tengo más de 15 años usando Linux pero soy de los que le gusta estar probando nuevas distribuciones, ver reviews y demás. Una cosa que si tengo claro es que estoy muy a favor de Debian y Ubuntu por la gran paquetería y la estabilidad que proveen.

En esta oportunidad se lo ganó Kubuntu 26.06 LTS, por su gran desarrollo, estabilidad y paquetes modernos, y no menos importante, KDE Plasma que se ha ganado mi cariño luego de que fuera un fan de Gnome de siempre. Plasma es uno de los escritorios que más ganado adeptos en entornos de Linux, por sus buenas herramientas, compatibilidad con wayland y la excelente flexibilidad y configuración. Pocos cambios le he hecho al escritorio, soy de usarlo como viene y Kubuntu trae un tema muy bien pulido que me gustó así que se quedó, sólo modifiqué par de cosas en el panel de tareas.

Aún me faltan muchas cosas por configurar y ajustarlo para producir, poco a poco lo iré haciendo, según mis necesidades. El servidor en casa ya está operativo y corriendo un nodo de 3speak Encoding, algo que les hablaré en otra oportunidad, lo importante es que esta siendo productivo, tanto para mi como para la red de Hive y todos los que aquí hacemos vida.

I've been setting up my workstation to be more comfortable and productive when I'm at home. I have the space, albeit limited, but it's mine, and that's very valuable. The idea is basically to have my laptop for work and a server to program remotely and run tests on. I've done it!

The first thing was to tidy up my desk, collect cables, organize the power outlets, and make everything clean and comfortable. It only took me a few hours; there are still things I can improve in the future, but I've got it done.

Above the monitor, I installed a wooden shelf, which I won't show for now, where the router and the server are located. Better use of space and more organization.

The next step was to install the server: the computer is an older Acer laptop that doesn't have a screen, but it's in very good condition. I installed a 512 GB hard drive to have enough capacity for what I plan to do with it. I was very clear about the operating system; I've worked with Ubuntu Server and I think it's the best—easy to use and stable. I'm sharing a screenshot of the remote connection.

The great thing about using a laptop with this type of processor is the low power consumption. This machine can be temporary if I find a good deal on one with a better processor. I'll be looking for one and thinking about it before making the investment.

With my Lenovo laptop, the situation was more complicated 😂—which distribution to install? I've been using Linux for over 15 years, but I'm one of those people who likes to try out new distributions, read reviews, and so on. One thing I'm sure of is that I'm a big fan of Debian and Ubuntu because of their extensive package lists and the stability they provide.

This time, Kubuntu 26.06 LTS won out because of its excellent development, stability, and modern packages, and not least, KDE Plasma, which has won me over after being a longtime Gnome fan. Plasma is one of the desktop environments that has gained the most popularity in Linux, thanks to its excellent tools, Wayland compatibility, and outstanding flexibility and configuration. I've made few changes to the desktop; I prefer to use it as is, and Kubuntu comes with a very polished theme that I liked, so I kept it. I only modified a couple of things in the taskbar.

I still have many things to configure and adjust for productivity, and I'll do it little by little, according to my needs. The home server is already up and running a 3speak Encoding node, something I'll talk about another time. The important thing is that it's proving productive, both for me and for the Hive network and everyone who works here.
