Giant Assassin Fly (Cophinopod chinensis)

This time it came with a larger stature; it was so muscular and had a bushy moustache, and it was definitely the most feared lord of the prairie among the family Asilidae.

Cophinopod chinensis is a giant robber fly whose habitat is mostly found in grassy fields. Just like other members of the Asilidae, this robber fly does not have jaws and only relies on a proboscis and sharp claws as weapons to kill prey. It feeds on grasshoppers, crickets, green bottleflies, and several other genera of robber flies in the smaller family Asilidae.

C. chinensis has a loud buzz that is as noisy as the bumblebee. A male can be recognized by its slimmer abdomen, while a female is fatter but still muscular.
