Are EVs cost effective and protect the environment or something else?

Greetings Hivers!

Governments are bent on promoting (rather say forcecing people to buy) Electric Vehicles (EVs). It is said that EVs would save environment as they do not emit green house gases and thus save the environment. But, in reality they need electricity which comes from burning fossil fuels and also need batteries which are difficult to dispose off.

So, my question is: Are EVs cost effective and protect the environment or something else?
