#DeepDives Tuesday: Watched a video that explores a JRPG trope: *God Slaying* fro ...
... m a sociological viewpoint. The video is long and you don't need to watch it, but I found his takes fascinating.
I'll DeepDive in this buzz's replies...

A god in Easy Asia is/was viewed differently than a god in the Western world.
They view godhood as something that can be achieved by mortals, resulting in a different worldview. All of the points in the video stem from this.

I'll add that their polytheistic view is different from pre-islamic Arab polytheists too, who believed in the worship of many gods but also believed in one Creator... Islam came to correct their worship to be only for that one Creator.

The video explains (maybe in too much detail) that with many religious systems come to Japan with amazing promises, only to be overthrown decades later with a new religion that does the same thing, they eventually fell into a state of nihilism.

That's why, God eventually became viewed as a System in Japan other than an Omnipotent Being. The video claims that most RPGs have you fight False Gods as bosses as a representation of overthrowing a broken system.

I like how he used Persona 5 as an example. One of the most obvious examples of a False god in an RPG being used as a metaphor for Japan's decaying system & need for change.
The FFVII example is great too, though I'm not sure about Sephiroth representing Government.

This is the first time I ever heard of the term :

I used this term because of character space. I forgot where I heard it, but it's not in this video. But I know I heard it referring to RPG video games at some point.
