Thoughts about Steam Deck... (I Really Want One!!)

I've been following PC Handhelds for a few years now. From GPD to AYA NEO and now Steam Deck. I enjoyed watching reviews about these devices.

Recently, the refresh for the Deck was announced: Steam Deck OLED. I watched every review and analysis. It's embarrassing how obsessed I became with it.

In this article, I'll gush about the device to sate my obsession™!

Steam Deck by Valve is a handheld device powerful enough to run AAA-games with decent performance.

Starting at $400, the price is more than appealing. The device is big for a handheld but lightweight for its size. It has a 7" inch screen with 1280x800 resolution. A powerful APU, and 16GB RAM.

The OLED version upgrades the screen to 7.4" inch OLED display and increases the battery life by ~30%. It also provides smaller updates like Bluetooth, Wifi and Audio improvements.

The software is as fascinating as the hardware for the price. It runs Steam OS, a special distribution of Linux focusing on gaming and ease of use. It has the ability to change the display settings and controller layout on per-game-basis. All reviewers sing its praises and Valve's efforts in improving it. The community support is also worth mentioning.

Still, while Steam Deck is powerful for a handheld, it's not the most powerful PC Handheld. Other handhelds from GPD, AYA NEO or the ROG Ally beat it in pure performance. They're offer less value for the price than Steam Deck, though. though. While Steam Deck can't run many AAA titles at Max settings, it beats every single PC in its price range.

For a few months now, I've been saving for the Steam Deck. I was going for the cheapest version. It was going well, but not as quickly as I hoped. I have other other expenses after all.

Now, with the release of Steam Deck OLED and after watching many videos about it. I'm not sure if I'll be going after the LCD version anymore. Steam Deck OLED is $150 more expensive, so if I'm saving for it, it'll take me a few extra months, (less with your support.) Anyway, wish me luck.

It's more than the monthly wage for most people in my country too. I'm saving up for it really slowly, but it's very powerful for the price so I think it'll be worth it.

Thanks for reading this post. Have some 🍕 !PIZZA with 💞 !LUV

Starting at $400, the price is more than appealing.

Appealing? This is rather overpriced. Like almost everything else in general nowadays.

It's two times as powerful as Nintendo Switch and it's only $100 more expensive. It's as powerful as PS4 and it's a handheld device. It's as powerful as $800 Laptop and it's half the price.

That's why I call the price appealing.

We bought a PlayStation Portable (PSP) for around $250 USD in/around 2008, and that alone provided much more fun than the most of the games and the most of the consoles nowadays. It is not always about power, but mostly the entertaining and the fun factor. There are much more fun, and even much more content in general in the older games than in the most of the games nowadays. You do not need a powerful device to enjoy good games.

Yeah, from that aspect (not focusing on power at all) I agree it's expensive... I'd say a Nintendo Switch Lite is the best current device for a (modern) PSP alternative.

When I said the price is appealing I thought "for its value" not only for the "fun factor" in which case I agree with you that fun should be independent of the device's power.
