Let's Play "Drift Mania" (PICO-8) - Watch Me Crash My Car Until I Got a Medal
Drift Mania is a Time Attack Driving game for PICO-8, the goal is to finish the racecourse as quickly as possible.
There are three racecourses in Drift Mania, but only one is unlocked at first. The others are locked behind Medals requirements. You earn medals by beating a racecourse quickly enough.
When you retry a race, you can see an after-image of your best time. I found it a fun feature as I'm trying to beat myself each time, and it makes me happy when I get a few extra seconds when I reach the end of the lap.
I took a long time to get a feel of the controls, you can watch me in this video drifting way too soon, or too much that I bump into a wall. It took me 15 rounds to finally get my first Bronze Medal! (I also didn't know that the Down button is used to brake until halfway through...)
Drift Mania offers some fun customization options, you can change the look and the type of the car. The colors. The tiers. For a racing game that you can only play against yourself, I believe that makes it much better.
I played Drift Mania for longer than I thought I would. I kept trying to beat my time and earn the medal, and was surprised to know I spent 25 minutes doing so. I'm sure I can earn the Gold Medal with some practice. The time I spent trying is well worth it in the end.
PICO-8 is a Fantasy Console designed to create, share and play small retro-inspired games. Games made for PICO-8 are constrained in aethistics, code and size to encourage creativity. PICO-8 comes with a built-in code editor, graphics, and sound tools. Games are distributed in image files called Cartridges. In this series of videos, I discover great games made on this Fantasy Console, letting you discover these games with me.
This playthrough was recorded on a Linux (PopOS) Laptop.
Thanks for Watching!
