Al-Khawarizmi, The Man Behind the Algebra and Algorithms - Trivia Tuesday #10

Trivia Tuesday is a series in which I choose a topic, and provide Fun Facts or Interesting Trivia about it. This time we'll talk about Al-Khawarizmi, the man behind the Algebra and Algorithms.

Al-Kawarizmi

A Khawarizmi was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who contributed much to these fields during the Islamic Golden Age. His full name is Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi.

Below I'll talk briefly about some of the achievements he accomplished.

Contribution to Mathematics: He introduced the Hindu-Arabic numerals to the Islamic World, which is the basis for the decimal system we use today. Al-Khawarizmi also pioneered Algebra.

Invention of Algorithms: His step-by-step method of solving problems was named after him. In Latin, it's called "Algorithm."

Contribution to Astronomy: Al-Khawarizmi worked on astronomical tables, and his work was the foundation for many developments in astronomy.

Contribution to Geography: He wrote a book discussing projecting the surface of the earth on a plane.

Al-Khawarizmi's books were translated into Latin in the medieval period, and they served as foundations for many developments in Europe during the Renaissance.

While not Arab, Al-Khawarizmi is highly respected by Arab and Islamic scholars and educators, and he's some Muslims even cite him as the inspiration for their study in mathematics and science.

I admire people in history who paved the way for our world's science, and Al-Khawarizmi is among the top of them.

What do you think?

The structure of this post was different than my usual #triviatuesday content. Instead of writing separate Fun Facts, I liked to write the info I found about him in one segment.

This ended up being a really short read. Would love to tell me your opinion on it.~
