Ice Skating: My Collage for LMAC #190
The template for Round #190 of the LMAC Collage contest was quite stark.
@shaka's Photo for LMAC Round #190
The first thing that came to mind was abandoned coal fields. I wasn't the only collagist to have this reaction. Others followed similar themes. Then I thought about the picture, and tried to see something positive. That's when I saw the horizon. I imagined a large sun behind the stark hills. I imagined an icy pond in the foreground. And the rock pile--the more I looked at it the more I thought of a woman with a generous skirt, dancing or skating.
First I made the woman:
A gif that shows how I made the skater from the rock pile (her hair came from tufts of grass on the ground):
Than I added the scenery, the dog and duck, and the clothing for all the figures.
A gif that shows how I added the ice, rainbow and dressed the figures:
After I was done, I thought perhaps the collage looked a bit plain, so I went to Lunapic and added snow. However, I really am minimalist by nature so I reverted to the plain version of this image.
Here's the snowy version:
As for the coal mines: There are areas around the US, and I'm sure around the world, where mining was so intense that the land was destroyed. Here's a YouTube video of one area in Pennsylvania (US) that was left with actual smoky ground after mining had stopped:
A takeoff on this environmental devastation was featured in a vintage comedy, Nothing but Trouble, that starred Chevy Chase:
The environmental devastation may be real, but that concern is often balanced against other interests: availability of fuel, and cost of fuel.
As this graph indicates, coal is the cheapest of all the fossil fuels. And there is no doubt that in some communities coal mining is an economic mainstay. It has provided jobs for generations and people are loathe to risk transitioning to another lifestyle. Thus coal has become a hot-button political issue.

The value of LIL in my efforts is obvious. Anyone on Hive can contribute to the library and everyone can borrow from it. Learn about the procedure here.
We have had some spectacular contests with handsome prizes this season. Today we are voting, that is, all of Hive is voting, on the winners to Round #190. Check out the 15 finalists and cast a vote for your favorite!
As @shaka has said many times, everyone is an artist. Round #191 begins tomorrow. Join in the fun. I don't enter the contest, but make a collage because I can't resist.
Thank you for reading. Peace and health to all.
I actually love how you were able to combine the things you have on your mind to form a wonderful collage
It makes sense
Thank you, @rafzat. I'm glad it makes sense, even with a scarfed duck and booted dog. This was fun.
Appreciate your kind comment.
Greetings Lady @agmoore, your creativity is wonderful, I admire you. The dress of the girl with the stones and create the grass hair, is ingenious and the result amazing. The ideal complement on stage were your friends properly dressed for the occasion. It is the demonstration that for creation and art there are no limits, we just have to let ourselves go with our instincts and our imagination. Thank you for bringing us information to reflect on the damages caused by mining, and they really are devastating. There are a lot of interests and also a lot of power.
Happy day Lady 🤗
You are very kind, @almajandra. I really enjoyed making the lady from stone, bringing something to life :) I found this template easier to deal with than the last because there was so much open space. I could truly let my imagination free. I do have a very vivid imagination 😇
Yes! And the people who suffer are usually poor...they get the dirty water, the foul air, the crumbling infrastructure.
Thank you for reading and for commenting meaningfully.
Have a great week, @almajandra!
Thank you for your replies. Happy week to you too Lady 🤗
I like the one with the snow. Soon, we'll get our first dump in the city. This is an El Nino year, so we won't have as much snow as we usually get, but this is the Pacific Northwest, so you never know what mayhem can occur.
Hopefully, we'll truly find an alternate source of energy and a technology that can clean up what was destroyed. At the risk of sounding like a tele-evangelist, have your heard the good word of AI? 😄
😂😂
I think I've come across at least one blogger on Hive (Ha!) who almost proselytizes about the virtues of AI. Who knows? He might be right.
The snowy one...you're probably right. Hope we don't see much of that stuff here on Long Island.
Enjoyed the result, and your talking about considering it.
The snowflakes decorating it it a very sweet way.
I also liked very much the lady image, and her shiny white skating shoes,- so touchy!
Thank you! I liked thinking about that lady, skating gracefully on the ice. Quiet all around. Just those animals to keep her company.
It was fun making the collage. It's the kind of diversion that keeps my mind off more 'serious' matters.
I appreciate your kind response. Have a great week, @qwerrie
We had our first light snowfall on Monday and it looks pretty on the trees. True I haven’t seen any rainbows while it’s snowing but anything is possible with our unpredictable weather.
Although I wasn’t dressed as fancy as the lady in the skating skirt, the lovely skating scene reminds me of my younger days when I would skate on an outside rink in our village.
Thanks for including my lil image of the Christmas hat in your beautiful collage, dear A.G.
Have a wonderful day!
Snow!! No snow in our immediate forecast. I am grateful. Snow is just too inconvenient these days 😇, although it is pretty before the first human footprints mar it.
We are finally in the new house, sort of. Half the family is there.
Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words about my collage. A bit of fluff that was fun to make.
Have a great week, my friend @redheadpei.
I loved every detail of your collage @agmoore, from what you show in your collage to what you write in your reflection. Creativity and thought merged in your work. Congratulations ;)
🌼🌺
Thank you very, very much, @esthersanchez. I was quite relaxed when I made this, and maybe that comes through.
Have a wonderful week. See you in the next round.....
