Visiting a Museum of Nature and Archeology in Tenerife🏛️🌿🏺 [ESP-ENG]

The most important museum in the island's capital is one dedicated to nature and archeology, commonly called MUNA. This is the typical museum with brown hallways and fossil exhibits that every science-loving kid would love to visit. I certainly would have loved this place if I had visited it as a kid. Not that now as an adult, I love it less, but we all know that the impression and curiosity between an adult and a child are not the same. In a previous post, I shared with you my experience in a similar museum located in La Laguna, a few kilometers above: Visiting a Science Museum with a Meteorite and Real Hieroglyphs🏛️🪐🚀. The latter, on the other hand, focused on astronomy and pure science.

El museo más importante de la capital de la isla es uno dedicado a la naturaleza y la arqueología, llamado comúnmente MUNA. Este es el típico museo con pasillos marrones y muestras de fósiles que todo niño amante de la ciencia le gustaría visitar. Yo sin duda hubiera amado este lugar de haberlo visitado de niño. No es que ahora siedo adulto lo ame menos, pero todos sabemos que no es igual la impresión y curiosidad entre un adulto y un niño. En una publicación anterior, les había compartido mi experiencia en un museo similar ubicado en La Laguna, unos kiómetros más arriba: Visita a un museo de ciencia con un meteorito y jeroglíficos reales🏛️🪐🚀. Este último, en cambio, se enfocaba en la astronomía y las ciencas puras.

I will share two more publications about this museum, besides this one. In one I will show you more about the animals this museum exhibits, of course not real animals but representations or fossils of them. In another post, I will show you the history of the Guanches, an ancestral tribe of the Canary Islands, and some of their mummies. As you may have guessed, my visit to the MUNA was full of many photographs taken in its facilities. I made this visit in October of last year.

Y en otra publicación, les mostraré la historia de los Guanches, tribu ancestral de canarias, y algunas de sus momias. Mi visita al MUNA, como ya supondrán, estuvo cargada de muchas fotografías tomadas en sus instalaciones. Esta visita la realicé en Octubre del año pasado.

In the front part of the museum, you can find an open-air room inside the building, in which some independent exhibitions are usually organized. At the time I was there, there was an exhibit about climate change and how it might affect our future food supply. Going into the museum, we can find some dark rooms that show a bit of the volcanic nature of the island, and the geography and natural environments of the different Canary Islands. En la parte inicial del museo, pueden encontrar una sala abierta al aire libre, interna del edificio, en la cual al parecer suelen organizarse ciertas exposiciones independientes. En el momento en el que yo estuve alli, había una exposición acerca del cambio climático y como este podría afectar nuestras provisiones de alimentos a futuro. Adentrándonos en el museo, podemos encontrar unas sals un poco oscuras que muestran un poco lo que es la naturaleza volcánica de la isla, la geografía y ambientes naturales de las diferentes islas canarias. Later on, I came across a very interesting exhibition of the crafts and archaeological remains of the Canary Islands. The remains of pots, wheels, and instruments, among other things that were part of the daily life of those who inhabited this part of the world several centuries or millennia ago stand out. According to the information of the place, the first settlers of the islands would have come during the first millennium before Christ. We can also see in this museum many representations of caves and some rudimentary structures that these ancient settlers built or used as homes and for other purposes. It is also very interesting the ancient engravings or some kind of writing that are represented on the walls of the museum. They are very similar to engravings of figures from other parts of the world.

Más adelante, me encontré con una muy interesante exposición de las artesanías y restos arqueológicos de Canarias. Sobresalen los restos de vasijas, ruedas, instrumentos, entre otras cosas que formaban parte del día a día de los que habitaban esta zona del mundo varios siglos o milenios atrás. Según la información del lugar, los primeros pobladores de las islas habrían venido durante el primer milenio antes de Cristo. Podemos ver también en este museo muchas representaciones de cuevas y algunas estructuras rudimentarias que estos antiguos pobladores construyeron o usaban como hogar y otros fines. Es muy interesante también los grabados antiguos o alguna especie de escritura que se encuentran representados en las paredes del museo. Son muy parecidos a grabados de figuras de otras partes del mundo.

From here, the museum exhibits many things about animals, both contemporary and ancient. The museum focuses on birds, reptiles, insects, and fish, although there are also some fossils of much older animals, as well as that of a species of Pterosaur. Among the birds, I think one of the ones I was most fascinated by is the "Zarapito" a small bird that I was able to see with my own eyes at Punta Hidalgo. Among the reptiles, the figure of a huge lizard that currently lives in the Canary Islands and is the size of a large iguana stands out. In a future post, I will show you more about the animals exhibited in this museum, as all the photographs would make this post endless.

A partir de aquí, el museo expone muchas cosas acerca de los animales, tanto contemporáneos como antiguos. El museo se centra en las aves, los reptiles, los insectos y los peces, aunque también hay algunos fósiles de animales mucho más antiguos, así como el de una especie de Pterosaurio. Entre las aves, creo que una de las que más sentí algo de fascinación es la del "Zarapito" una pequeña ave que pude ver con mis propios ojos en Punta Hidalgo. Entre los reptiles, destaca la figura de un enorme lagarto que actualmente vive en Canarias y que tiene el tamaño de una iguana grande. In the area of insects, there is a whole collection of butterflies of all kinds and colors stored in drawers or drawers. You can spend a whole afternoon appreciating each one of them in detail, if you are an entomologist or if you are fascinated by insects. This museum has three levels and several corridors that give access to different thematic areas. In one of the sections, we can find several mummies, skulls, and interesting information about the Guanches, a tribe or civilization that inhabited the islands before the European conquest a little more than half a century ago. In a future publication, I will show you more about it.

En el área de los insectos, existe toda una colección de mariposas de todo tipo y colores guardadas en cajones o gavetas. Puedes pasar toda una tarde apreciando a detalle cada una de ellas, eso si eres entomólogo o te fascinan los insectos. Este museo posee tres niveles y varios pasillos que dan acceso a diversas áreas temáticas. En una de las secciones podemos encontrar diversas momias, calaveras e información interesante acerca de los Guanches, tribu o civilización que habitó las islas antes de la conquista europea hace poco más de medio siglo. En una próxima publicación les mostraré más al respecto.

One of my favorite parts is where fossils and some minerals or crystals are displayed. One of the living fossils is shown, which is a horseshoe crab. Interestingly, some fossils are shown just as they are inside a rock, fully preserved due to some geological process. I would visit this museum again in the future, even though I know what I might find. It is a museum that is very well located in the central part and near the sea of the city of Santa Cruz. It has a streetcar station very close, plus the TEA and the Recova Municipal Market or Market of Africa are nearby.

Una de mis partes favoritas en donde se exponen fósiles y algunos minerales o cristales. Uno de los fósiles vivientes es mostrado, el cual es un cangrejo herradura. Es interesante que algunos fósiles se muestran tal cual como se encuentran dentro de una roca, totalmente conservados debido a algún proceso geológico. Sin duda alguna volvería a vsitar este museo en un futuro, si bien ya sé lo que podría encontrar. Es un museo que se encuentra muy bien ubicado en la parte central y cerca del mar de la ciudad de Santa Cruz. Posee una estación de Tranvía muy cerca, además de que el TEA y el Mercado Municipal de la Recova o Mercado de África se encuentran cerca.
