FROM STUDENT TO PROTOTYPE BUILDERS: A CLOSER LOOK AT THE RESEARCH STUDIES OF STEM-SAPPHIRE RESEARCHERS: An Introduction
MABUHAY mga Ka-Research!
As practical research emerges as an essential component of academics and curriculum, students discover the power of knowledge, logic, and objectivity. The active section of the Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Engineering (STEM) strand, known as Sapphire, of Grade 12 at Anselmo A. Sandoval Memorial National High School equipped themselves with wisdom and the application of analytical and critical thinking. Divided into five research groups, these exceptional students immerse themselves in their respective fields of interest in relation to their academic track to provide meaningful studies and uncover the hidden gems within their chosen topics. These researchers are guided by Sir Rodel Catajay (@guruvaj), in which five leaders are chosen to be the spearheads of each group. The five leaders are Ms. Ma. Francheska A. Maramot (@chskmrmt), Ms. Sharmaine Roselle S. Sallan (@sharmavii), Ms. Lara Vivienne M. Panopio (@laviyen), Ms. Phoemela Irish G. Las Piñas (@laspinas), and Ms. Yesha Mae L. Dalisay (@ymdlsy).
The first group of researchers was led by Ms. Maria Francheska A. Maramot emphasizing “Bio-Flame: Sustainable Utilization of Biogas from Cow Manure and Vegetable Waste Towards Renewable Cooking Fuel Production”. Their study does not only aim to address the growing energy demands in energy consumption but also strive to reduce the environmental impact of traditional energy sources. Through organic waste, such as cow manure and vegetable waste, these researchers are exploring how to convert these materials into bio-gas. The dedication of these research students in the field of bio-gas, inclined toward science, presents a great future for sustainable energy solutions and a greener world.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sharmaine Roselle S. Sallan and her team of researchers conducted a study entitled, “Innovation on Eco-Waste: Developing All Natural Fire Starter Briquettes as an Alternative for Charcoal Lighter Fluids in Collaboration with Existing Burning Blocks.” These innovative research students have embarked on a unique project aimed at revolutionizing waste management and reducing environmental impact. This study provides a prototype that not only promotes natural resource utilization but also aims to mitigate the harmful effects of charcoal-lighter fluids on the environment. Through their innovation, these researchers are opening pathways for a more sustainable future.
Then, the third research group conducted a study that dive into natural remedies. This is entitled, “Kalanchoe pinnata and Cocos nucifera Essential Oil’s Application through the Investigation of Rapid Wound-Healing Activities,” under the leadership of Ms. Lara Vivienne M. Panopio. Through investigation and experimentation with native pigs found in Batangas, Philippines, they have uncovered results that showcase the properties of these plant extracts. These essential oils, derived from the aqueous leaf extract of Kalanchoe pinnata and the coconut milk of Cocos nucifera, have shown rapid wound-healing activities that accelerate the regeneration and repair of damaged skin on pigs effectively. Their study, which is inclined toward science and mathematics, holds significance in advancing the field of natural remedies and inspiring further research into natural resources for improving health and well-being.
Moreover, the fourth group of researchers, under the leadership of Ms. Phoemela Irish G. Las Piñas, conducted their study entitled, “Building Renewable Lightweight Brick Incorporated with Cigarette Butts and Kokonut Husks as a Subterfuge to Smear.” Merging these waste materials, cigarette butts and coconut husks, into the production of bricks is a successful prototype building in which the use of these unusual but effective ingredients in brick making acts as a subterfuge to smear. These students have demonstrated the potential of transforming waste into a valuable resource while contributing to sustainable construction, which has the potential to revolutionize the construction industry and inspire others to explore unique solutions for environmental challenges.
Finally, with the leadership of Ms. Yesha Mae L. Dalisay in the fifth group, they conducted a study entitled, “Advancing Sustainable Alternatives to Mitigate Single-Use Product Pollution and Promote Environmental Conservation with Talahib-based Bioplastics.” With the growing concern over the impact of single-use plastics on the environment, these students find innovative solutions. From the talahib, a locally abundant and sustainable grass, they have successfully developed bioplastics that are not only compostable but also cost-effective. This leads to reducing plastic waste, preserving our natural resources, and providing another green environment.
Through the collaborative efforts of Sapphire’s Class with five research groups, an exceptional class of STEM students aim to expand their knowledge across academic fields. From the world of biology and other branches of science and mathematics, and from the depths of a greener environment and technology, each research group contributes to successful studies. As these students embark on their academic journeys, they will inspire a new generation of researchers to understand the continuing path towards a brighter future and development.
More awesome post to come from the Grade 12 STEM Sapphire!
