AI: it's Disruption And Impact In Medicine

(Edited)

Everything about life has got to do with intelligence, that's to say that the world tour around on the wheels of intelligence and it's no longer news that the scientists and technologists developed a massive tool called, the Artificial Intelligence(AI).

What happens when an intelligence has been developed already and remember, the world tours on wheels of intelligence... It's safe henceforth to say that AI drives the world, hehehe.

AI affects every aspect of our life and every occupation as it stands now but is it safe to affect an occupation that deals directly with Human's health and general well-being?

Health is wealth they say and we shouldn't joke with it.

The title above was our topic for a seminar workshop I went and while we were still waiting for the members of the hightable to come, the organiser pointed out persons to give an impromptu speech on the topic and this post is about what I said then, just my personal view....

The Impact Of AI On Medicine

  • Easy Accessibility:

Just with your phone or laptops, anyone can easily access the health materials available and even go as far as writing out the symptoms they are feeling and the AI will give you possible diagnosis or differential to what is wrong with you then go ahead to prescribe some medications used in treating the sickness just from the comfort of your bed.

  • Saves Cost:

The emergence of AI has saved a lot of persons the financial cost of coming to the hospital to spend huge amount of money for their treatment and also for consultations as this could easily be done with the AI applications.

  • Saves Time:

Some persons don't get medical opinions for their ill-health not because they don't want to but because they consider the time they will spend in the hospital as it seems coming to the hospital is a day job as you have to clear your schedule for the day anyday you want to come to the hospital but with the emergence of AI, people easily access health materials at the comfort of their homes.

Disruptions of AI On Medical Field

  • Late presentation to the hospital:

The emergence of AI has made it difficult for patients to present early to clinic as they would have resorted to various medications prescribed by the AI and sometimes might complicate their treatment as there was no proper exploration into these symptoms to know exactly what is wrong with this patient before prescription.

This makes patients to present to the hospital only after they have gotten worse and the prognosis is now looking not so favourable again thereby making treatment difficult.

  • Problem of dosage:

One of the reasons why people speak against some of our traditional medications is because of lack of approximate dosages.

Anyone who doesn't have a proper medical training is likely to make a mistake when not directed on how to take the right medications not to talk of medications for paediatrics group where a lot of calculations are done to get the appropriate doses.

AI will tell you the drugs to use and the dosages but will not get the dosages for you, hence, people are prone to making mistakes there and complicating their conditions...It becomes more like self-medication.

  • Emotional Advantage:

It's funny to say but as Humans, we need people to Comfort us and show us the feelings and emotions that they care for us and wants us to get better....

Someone admitted in the hospital for an illness will always get this from his relatives, family members and most importantly from the attending physicians and nurses taking care of her.

Ai is wonderful but then it's got no feelings to show you, you can't feel it rather it simply gives you the drugs you need and that's all.

Sometimes, emotional impacts are also part of the healing process of patients and the emergence of AI is/will take it away from a lot of persons.

"Oops, your time is up", the MC said and I had to hand over the microphone to the next speaker.

So what do you think, Will AI has all that impacts on medicine or did I just cook something out of adrenaline rush, hehe?

Thanks for reading and have a nice day ahead 👍
