The Place of Science with Mummy Brains
While it was one of the symptoms I also experienced as a new Mum, I didn't know there was a definitive name to qualify the description until I heard from a woman who was also sharing her after-birth experience, I could relate to everything she said except the term she called, ''Mommy Brain'' or "momnesia".
The term is used to describe the several cases of forgetfulness experienced by new Mothers. There is no established research to show that childbirth rewires the brain and makes you forgetful, but there is research that shows pregnancy actually changes the brain in other ways. Several parts of the brain are affected by motherhood, including the hypothalamus, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, and hippocampus.
Pregnancy and postpartum experiences change your sleep pattern. It becomes almost impossible to get the type of consistent sleep you used to have. Your ability to make plans, analyze, and process will no longer be the same.
There was a research that compared the brain of some women two to four weeks postpartum and three to four months postpartum, the research showed result of an in-between, gray matter which increased in multiple areas. This type of increase does not happen naturally within a short time except for the occurrence of a major brain-like brain injury.
The places where the changes were observed were the areas responsible for supporting maternal motivation, emotion processing, and rewarding, sensory integration, and judgment, This explains why mothers shower their children with special praises. Parenting also comes with the ability to adapt their behavior and thinking to their environment.
A greater display of empathy and love is usually associated with mothers, and although this is based on societal standards, it can be backed up by science. Pregnancy affects every area of the body, and the brain is not an exception to that, some studies show that the difference made with the brain can last for as long as two years after childbirth.
Even if you do not believe that mommy's brain is triggering the change you are experiencing or not, lack of sleep can contribute significantly to forgetfulness and you may start to notice changes when baby begins to sleep well at night. Some of these lifestyle changes I will be sharing can help even those whose forgetfulness isn't triggered by the presence of mommy's brain.
The first is to sleep well, understandably, you will not be getting a lot of sleep as a new mum, but trying to get one will significantly help with your memory. Eating well is essential too, getting basic nutrients through good food will save the day.
Trying to take advantage of technology, or a simple pen and paper to note down activities to be done will help you with getting things done. Spending time with lovely people who care about you i significant for your well-being, even if you want to always stay with your baby at a time like this, taking some time off will help your mind get very relaxed.
