Cloud bombardment

Cloud bombardment

The bombardment of clouds consists of releasing into the atmosphere a compound whose particles will serve as a nucleation center to agglomerate gothic water and form larger drops so that it falls as liquid rain under its own weight.

Many countries have done it either for war or for their benefit, but the atmosphere is too complex to know all the variables and know how much these experiments affect, but this has not stopped many countries from trying again and again, without assess the true effects on the environment.

China for example, boasts a lot about its ability to control the weather supposedly at the 2008 Beijing Olympics they bombed the clouds around the region so that any rain would fall outside of Beijing during the two week competitions they also claim to have used bombing of clouds days before the celebrations of the centenary of the communist party and thus people were able to attend the parade in Tianamen Square without getting wet and with clean air of pollution.

Israel, for example, has bombarded its clouds since the 50s to benefit agriculture in the north of the country, but curiously in 2021 they canceled that program, perhaps realizing that it is probably useless.

Other places where this practice is used or has been used include India, Iran, Kuwai, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Thailand, France, Spain, Russia, Germany, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Mexico.

But then the bombardment of clouds is useful or not to stimulate rain, the answer is not simple, there are only two studies with conclusive results and both are about the bombardment of icy clouds increasing snowfall in the mountains, none talk about rain, In my opinion, governments continue to do it because the cost of these programs is relatively cheap, so if it doesn't work anyway, you don't lose so much budget.

It's like carrying a lucky charm, probably it's useless, but it doesn't cost you anything to bring it in case you doubt it, it costs very little money, but what about the environmental impact; spraying silver iodide and glycerin cannot be good for the environment or yes, not really, for the environment silver iodide is a toxic compound and can affect animals, bacteria, fungi and algae, the last two are very important for the health of the crop soil, but the amounts used during cloud bombardment are so small that they do not accumulate in dangerous concentrations.

Of course, if we sprayed the same area very frequently, at some point you would have concentrations high enough to cause health problems, but for the moment there is no problem because we are far from that scenario.

In some places like Saudi Arabia, these rain stimulation methods are seen as a potential solution for droughts, but this is a mistake, cloud bombardment if it works at all we don't know only works if there is enough moisture in the air, if there is no moisture and no clouds the water will not magically appear, so this method should not be treated as a climate change-enhanced solution to drought.
