Castles: Borba, Monforte (New record 58) 🏰📍
We are continuing to explore the beautiful and small Portuguese territory. As I have been doing for some years now, I want to leave my personal mark. If you already follow me, you probably know that I am trying to break the record for visiting all the castles in Portugal. Currently, I have already visited about 58, which is a number that I am almost sure no Portuguese person has reached. Today, I will show you two small but interesting fortresses in the Alentejo.🏰🚩

Continuamos explorando el hermoso y pequeño territorio portugués. Como vengo haciendo desde hace unos años para dejar mi marca personal, si ya me sigues, probablemente sepas que estoy intentando batir el récord de visitar todos los castillos de Portugal. Actualmente ya he completado unos 58, una cifra que estoy casi seguro de que ningún portugués ha alcanzado. Hoy te mostraré dos pequeñas pero interesantes fortalezas del Alentejo.🚙📸
Borba Castle🧭 🏰/ Castillo de Borba🚩📍
We begin with Borba Castle, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal. It is older than Monforte Castle, having been commissioned in 1217. It was crucial for keeping the city safe from future invasions or bandits, especially because Borba was also known as the 'marble' city.🚩📍

Era crucial mantener la ciudad salvaguardada de futuras invasiones o saqueadores, sobre todo porque la ciudad de Borba también era conocida como la ciudad del mármol💎🌏.
This area was dominated by the Moors, as I have explained in many posts. Actually, the Portuguese people lived in the territory before it became a nation, but they were located further north. Therefore, these are called 'Reconquest' wars and not 'conquests.' As you can see, this castle is very different from what we are used to seeing in photos; it is fully integrated with the city. In 1302, under the Castilian threat, the walls were reinforced.🚩

It is normal to see empty streets in the Alentejo during summer because it is too hot. The castle features a blend of Gothic style with a rectangular military architecture. Its outer wall surrounds the houses of the historic city center. It is fully walkable, although there is no clearly visible main tower.🚙🚩
Es normal ver las calles vacías en el Alentejo en verano; hace demasiado calor. El castillo tiene una mezcla gótica con una arquitectura militar rectangular. Monforte Castle🧭 🏰/ Castillo de Monforte🚩📍
It has a different style compared to the first, but this is not a positive thing; on the contrary, it shows too much restoration and alteration to the original military architecture. I find this strange because it is newer than the one in Borba.🏰
Tiene un estilo diferente si lo comparamos con el primero, pero esto no es positivo; al contrario, se nota que hay mucha restauración y alteración de la arquitectura militar original. Esto me parece extraño porque es más nuevo que el de Borba.📍
This castle combines the historical periods of Afonso III and King Dinis, dating back to 1309. It was built to reinforce the border with Castile, as no Moors remained in the region by that date. The structure features a quadrangular layout with four towers, though they are not fully visible. Unlike Borba, it sits at a high altitude of around 300 meters, offering incredible views over the Alentejo valley.🚩🚙
Este castillo combina los períodos de Alfonso III y el rey Dinis, y data de 1309. También se construyó para reforzar la frontera castellana, debido a que en esa fecha ya no quedaban moros en la región. Tiene una arquitectura cuadrangular con cuatro torres, a pesar de que no son totalmente visibles. A diferencia de Borba, está situado a gran altitud, a unos 300 metros, y las vistas del valle alentejano son increíbles.🗺️
Some features of the castle, like the cistern, are still visible. However, the keep—which is crucial for a castle to truly be a castle—is no longer there. It makes me a little sad to see such an important piece of the country's history in ruins while the government wastes money on frivolous things. This castle is also located in the Alentejo region, but in the district of Portalegre, which, guess what? Also has a castle! We'll upload photos of it later!📸🌏
Aún se observan algunas características del castillo, como el aljibe; sin embargo, la torre del homenaje —que es crucial para que un castillo sea un castillo— ya no está aquí. 🚩 I give both castles 3/5 stars; they are simple and, in my opinion, neglected
🚩 Borba Castle, aside from the town itself, doesn't have much else nearby, while Monforte has some interesting trails, but I recommend doing them in winter or spring
🚩 Both areas are isolated; you should visit them with a rental car. Alentejo, in particular, is cheaper than Lisbon and Porto.

Buenas tardes @biologistbrito, seguro que no sólo has visitado más castillos de Portugal que ningún portugués, sino que no debe haber otra perosona en el mundo que lleve 58 visitados (creo). Es una pena que algunos castillos no estén restaurados como debiera, pero también es cierto que muchos de la península ibérica sólo quedan las ruinas. Gracias por estas visitas.

Imaginas un tio cuya profesion sea estudiar castillos, arqueologo, 😅, y tenga 20 años de profesion, creo que lo hare algo mas personal si un dia el canal de youtube se hace famoso llevare el reto a otro nivel, cual es el castillo de España que mas te impacto?
Buena pregunta... mi estimado, la fortaleza militar que más me ha impactado, sin duda, es la Alhambra. Sobre el canal yo veo que va muy bien... hay que darle un poco de tiempo y ya estarás en ese otro nivel.

Saludos @biologistbrito, 58 castillos es bastante, espero que pronto puedas lograr la meta de visitar todos los castillos de Portugal, ambos son hermosos pero mi favorito es el primero me gusta el diseño abovedado de la puerta y las paredes con rocas, el segundo también tiene su encantó una larga muralla blanca y la fachada donde convergen las escaleras con forma triangular.
